Empirical Anthelmintic Therapy for Patients with Eosinophilia in Nepal: A Prospective Cohort Study

Eosinophilia is common in low-resource countries and usually implies helminthiasis. Since helminthiasis a cause of eosinophilia its diagnosis cumbersome, we hypothesized that broad-spectrum anthelmintic therapy may decrease the eosinophil count eventually cure helminthiasis, whether microbiologic established or not. We recruited patients with aged 5 years older who presented to Dhulikhel hospital, Nepal. Patients were treated albendazole ivermectin. A stool sample for microscopy was obtained. Of total 113 patients, 106 had follow-up visit 56 classified as responders treatment (defined below 500 cells/µL, an absolute more than 1000 cells/µL). For all found responding group (more 50% whole cohort), decreased substantially. All samples negative. The reason lack response remaining unclear. In order ascertain should be indication treatment, randomized controlled study empirical after thorough workup needed.
